Gender vs Sex
My whole life I never knew the difference between sex and gender. On applications and official forms they always ask you to check of the box for “sex: male female” rarely is it gender. Society instills the idea that there is no difference between sex and gender, but after reading the assigned pages in My Gender Workbook, I have learned to understand and accept Bornstein’s definitions of sex and gender. Bornstein defines sex as an act and gender as an identity, what one is. How could I not see this before? It makes perfect sense. One cannot be sex, however one can be a gender. Believing that sex and gender is the same thing was ignorant on my part, and I appreciate reading Kate Bornstein’s, My Gender Workbook, for helping me understand the two different concepts.
