Gendered Sex Categories Normalized: A Tangled Binary

Before this week’s readings, the thought of a transgendered person comepeting in the Olympics never crossed my mind; not because I think that transgendered people shouldn’t compete in the Olympics, but because I never thought of it as a problem before.  After reading Sexing the Body, I learned about the true judgements people hold.  Living in southern California, more specifically Los Angeles, my whole life I have always been exposed to cultures, sexualities, and people different than myself.  I grew up believing that everyone should be treated the same regardless of their race, religion, or gender.  It is hard for me to wrap my mind around the idea that a “woman” would be questioned about her gender and her capability to compete against other women.
